Levels of Being a K-Pop Fan

Based on Merriam Webster (2014), a fan "is an enthusiastic devotee or an ardent admirer or enthusiast". Basically, when you are a K-pop fan you are a part of the Hallyu fever.

There are five stages of being a K-pop fan:

1)Novice
In this level, you are just starting to discover what K-pop is all about. You probably like someone from a drama or song. The extreme thing that you can do is to listen to artist's song, watch drama, and search for pictures and videos.

2) Intermediate
You started to have a bias. Bias is another word for favorite. You already started to know the basic Korean words, know other celebrities aside from your bias, know the tune or lyrics of the song, and dance the "point" of the song. You can already determine the voice of your bias even if you close your eyes.

3) Advanced
You are in this level, if you are already willing to spend money to support the artist. You just don't buy the recent album but the past as well. Aside from albums, you also buy products that they endorse. You spend money just to watch their concerts(VIP) or fan meets.

4) Accomplished
Simply, if anybody asks you about K-pop in general you can answer it. Let me clearly say that not just particularly with your favorite artist but others as well. Aside from it, you already visited Korea, joined contests and even created a way to meet other fans as well. Your determination to share your knowledge to other people is unmatchable.

5) Sasaeng
It refers to fans who make ways for their bias to notice them. They invade privacy. They get personal information, follow them, threat and even hurt them. This fans are really dangerous that they will do anything to be "close" with their idols.

In what level do you belong? Share it to us! :)

  1. Well the sasaeng level is reserved for mental people; Any decent person would respect their idols' space.

EXO and their Sasaeng Fans (The Fatal Encounter of Each Member)

Here are just some and documented EXO-sasaeng related accounts: 1. Suho Back in 2013, audio recordings of EXO were leaked online. They were in controversy because 1) they were cursing while playing in an online game 2) they were playing with girls (soon to be found out to be members of A Pink). (RUMOR: EXO'S Chen is reportedly dating a member of A Pink). Of course it became a big deal because EXO were "young" and they shouldn't speak "bad words". In addition, they were with girls. The sasaeng fan eventually had his number and threaten Suho.  Here is the translated conversation (courtesy of NetizenBuzz) Suho: So are you trying to say you’re going to threaten me? What is it that you want? A: I’m not threatening you. I won’t get into a lawsuit for releasing a three minute clip, right? I didn’t release the original. Suho: What is it that you want? A: What I want? I’m not threatening you, I don’t want anything ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ I just want to know that I won’t be
